As it is known, the candidates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) had won the three metropolitan municipalities in the local elections of 30 March 2014 and then trustees were appointed to their places for the same reasons in 2016.
Hundreds of people who reacted to the decision marched to municipal buildings to protect their elected mayors. Security forces intervened in the gathered people.
Many politicians, political parties and former co-founders and politicians of the AK Party, such as Ahmet Davutoglu and Abdullah Gul, also reacted to the trustee appointments and described the situation as unlawful.
Imamoğlu said on his Twitter account, “The dismissal of Diyarbakir, Van and Mardin metropolitan mayors elected by the votes of the nation in the 31 March local elections and the appointment of trustees to their places cannot be explained by democracy and democratic practices. Ignoring the will of the nation is unacceptable.”
