Hugh Williamson, director of Europe and Central Asia, who made the statement on behalf of Human Rights Watch, said:

“President Erdogan‘s government has canceled the results of local elections in March with dismissing the mayors of three major cities in the East and Southeast, where Kurds live heavily and appointing trustees to replace them. To accuse the mayors of being linked to terrorist organizations in order to deprive the Kurdish population living in Turkey of their elected representatives endangers anyone who believes in democratic elections, Human Rights and the principle of the rule of law in Turkey.”
