ZERnews – Europa Union News: Maja Kocijancic, Spokesperson for European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, reacted against dismissal of Van, Diyarbakir, and Mardin mayors and appointment of trustees to Kurdish metropolitan municipalities.
“Governers’ replacement of Selcuk Mızraklı, Bedia Özgökçe Ertan, and Ahmet Türk arouse serious concern as it questions the respect for the democratic results of the March 31 elections,” Kocijancic said.
Kocijancic stressed that voters are deprived of political representation as elected local politicians are subjected to detention and being replaced by trustees. Kocijancic made a written statement indicating serious threats destroying local democracy in Turkey.
Kocijancic stated that Turkey should revoke the decision disrupting the operation of local governments, in accordance with its engagement to the European Charter of Local Self-Government and recommendations of Venice Commission.
Kocijanc said that the government of Turkey has the legitimate right to fight against terrorism. However, she also stated that Ankara is responsible for guaranteeing the rule of law in the Constitution, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
